Stone fortifications above white buildings on a rocky headland surrounded by the sea in Peñíscola

Your photo question

What is the fortress in this photo, and who was Papa Luna?

Your guide’s answer

Stone fortifications rise above the white buildings on a rocky headland, with the sea surrounding much of it. The castle at the top is Peñíscola Castle, also known as the Castle of Papa Luna.

The Knights Templar built the medieval castle, completing it in 1307. Later it became the residence of Pedro de Luna, better known as Benedict XIII or Papa Luna. His story belongs to the Western Schism, when rival claimants disputed the papacy. He continued to defend his claim after losing much of his support; the Catholic Church classifies him as an antipope.

Look again at how the sea wraps around the headland. That position helps explain why this was such a powerful defensive site.
